Liver
Elevated GGT

in Liver
My Ggt enzymes came back super high, 347. My transplant coordinator called me today n informed me of this. I’m redoing my bloodwork Monday. Their 1st question was whether I was drinking. And no I don’t drink now n never was much of a drinker. Does anyone have any info they can share with me? If my bloodwork comes back as “bad” Monday I have to go back to the hospital n get a biopsy. “AAUGH!!!!” This transplant “stuff” is tough. Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Hi KevR, same thing happened to me it’s called rejection which can happen, they ended up putting me on steroids adj. my meds and things went back to normal. I did not have to have a biopsy I decided against it.
I know this TP journey has so many ups downs but hang in there your team will figure it out!š
Thanks once again @Melsamm for your help. That’s what my team told me it might be. I will keep you posted. I have to go back n redo my BW n if it comes back negative again I will have to go back to the hospital. That’s a tough word, rejection.
š I know ii is the best thing is you can get out of the rejection .
I am here for u please keep me posted my friend.

@KevR GGT can be high for multiple reasons, not just alcohol related. I've had issues related to Epstein Barr, but I know there can be more reasons than just that. I always try to remember my team is working with the easiest thing first and branching out, even if it makes me incredibly frustrated. I always say I'm glad they are thinking so far down the line with biopsies, because I'm a one step at a time kinda gal and I need someone to be forward thinking, but I also wish they wouldn't tell me because it just makes me more stressed it seems! I'm a big proponent of repeat labs and going from there.
Thanks @AliEm14. Still waiting for results. Took them Monday at labcorp n usually get results in just over 24 hrs. Will keep you posted.
Update: Numbers still high but did improve. Waiting on hospital.
Hi KevR , probably getting ready to pump u up on some steroids
Since the first day after transplant (March 2022) there never was a time when my GGT came back normal. In the first year it went up as high as 670. However it gradually came down to 148 at my latest test last month. The normal is below 64. My hepatologist had ordered 2 biopsies, 2 MRIs, an ERCP, 2 ultrasounds. All came back normal.
I also have my ALK PHOS levels quite high, also never normal in the past 34 months. My endocrinologist ordered certain labs to locate the source of the ALK PHOSE enzyme. The result showed that the bulk of it (70%) comes from the liver. She was trying to rule out the bones as a source as sometimes some bone diseases cause elevated ALK PHOS levels. It was found out that a much smaller volume was from the bones. My Hepatologist read the report & said there is nothing more he can do as the main liver enzymes (ALT & AST) were all stable throughout. In other words he was telling me that I will have to live with the elevated values. I have deep fatigue since the beginning. Other wise I am "ok".
Thank you both @Melsamm and @TMY.
Even though #s were elevated they are continuing me on the same medication regimen. Thanks all for helping with this problem.
