Coaching?
Updated June 3, 2021

Since coming into the transplant world I’ve become aware of this concept of chronic illness coaching/transplant coaching...
this is the kind of thing that I wished I had when I was younger but didn’t know it existed (or maybe it didn’t then? Is it new?)
I have trauma and grief coaching certifications and am in an embodiment certification now, and I feel like this is the next vein in my coaching career.
I’m just curious - did you work with a chronic illness coach pre/post transplant? What did you learn? I have a therapist but am looking at the value in peer support as opposed to traditional therapy.

I did not have a chronic illness coach pre or post transplant. I was introduced to a social worker and I would get a therapist at one point. Once I was post transplant my center did introduce me to peers my age who were also post transplant to ask questions and/or talk to.
I didn’t have any coaching. After transplant I had a social worker that I saw maybe twice but that’s it. I read a lot and educated myself all I could and still try to do that. I do have an amazing post transplant coordinator who I can talk to. My hospital offers classes before and after transplant but I’m 3 1/2 hours away.

I haven't met/seen any chronic illness coaches. It is something I'm interested in doing, because that was such a missing piece of my story. I had no support reintegrating into life, adjusting to a new "normal," and dealing with all of the mental health issues I did post-transplant.
There's a real need for people who have been on the receiving end of transplant to be able to not only empathize, but also to provide a listening ear and support for those waiting and those post-transplant.
I couldn’t agree more. How would Someone begin the process to be a coach? Is there a certification process/ License that you need? I would love to help others through the transplant process.
@Hannahksh Could you possibly answers these questions or have any information on this topic?
Hey everyone! I have recently trained as a Life Coach - In the U.K it is actually not necessary to have a certificate or an accreditation to call yourself a coach but this is beginning to change within the industry and a lot of people are calling for more restrictions around it.
I trained with The Coaching Academy and you are told to find a niche within the framework of Life Coaching so you stand out more. I know that Eliza Bell (transplant chats with Eliza) is specialising in Pre and Post Transplant Coaching after her training last year.
I'm not sure how it works in America I'm afraid but let me know if you have any more questions. :) Thanks @ChefAmanda

I have never worked with a coach or heard of one outside sports or work - seems so appropriate and needed! Perhaps we can create a syllabus and give out certificates ??

@Deb yes! I’m 5 hours away from my centre so any programs they had I can’t do. I’m in a rural area and I’m noticing a huge need for support here
Transplant Patient
@Karin yes! I’d love to help you create this. I see such a need, and those I’ve seen are basically figuring it out for themselves. But it is such a needed resource

@Deb as @Hannahksh mentioned, I believe you have to be certified as some kind of coach and then find a niche.
I have my 200hr yoga teacher training, 100hr breathwork training and energy body training, so creating mind body movement and holistic healing opportunities are what I do. I also am a certified TFMR and miscarriage doula, I’ve taken a number of trauma trainings, a death doula training and am in a course right now to be an embodiment practitioner.
I’ve heard of Eliza (she got me int this whole world) but from my background i definitely want to take a more holistic approach to it, and not just do transplants but any kind of trauma that happens to/in the body
@Hannahksh @AliEm14 I reached out to the wonderful Eliza and told her about this exact topic. I asked her to join TransplantLyfe so maybe she could be some help.
@karin I love the idea of possibility starting a program.
I think this is a wonderful idea! At the time of my transplant I was introduced to a social worker. My transplant center has support groups. But the times are always inconvenient. If there was a coach available it would be great! There is so much to juggle with a chronic illness.

@Jeanmarie yes! I never found anything offered by my centre accessible. And I know early on i would have loved having one on one support from someone who’s been there.

@ChefAmanda ooh yes! I love that. I think we could totally put our brains together and come up with some kind of coaching/peer support program for transplant patients. I work with a pregnancy loss organization and along with having certified coaches do coaching sessions they also have trained volunteers doing a peer hotline. Maybe not necessarily a hotline but I’d love something like that for the chronic illness community. Starlight used to have an online chat for that, where you could just login and chat and there were different moderators at different hours, and that was amazing but they shut it down a few years ago

How do we start???
@AliEm14 Oh I love the hotline idea. That seems awesome. It sucks that Startlight shut it down.
@Karin I think getting a zoom call of people interested together would be a good start?
