19 Year Kidney-versary
Today marks my 19-year kidney-versary, a milestone that fills me with so much gratitude and reflection.
On January 3, 2006, I was given the ultimate gift—a kidney from my dad. Transplant life has been nothing short of a rollercoaster, filled with ups and downs, but I can say without hesitation that it has been worth every single second. The challenges I've faced only make me appreciate the good times even more. The transplant has allowed me to fully embrace life, to cherish every moment with my family, my friends, and all the little things that make life so beautiful.
Looking back, it's hard to believe how far I've come. When I was diagnosed with lupus nephritis in 1996 at just 16 years old, I felt like my world had shattered. The news was devastating. I thought my life was over, and all the dreams I had envisioned for my future seemed out of reach. I never imagined that I could live a full, vibrant life. But here I am, nearly two decades later, living a life that has been nothing short of amazing.
However, with all that said, my transplanted kidney is now working steadily at just 13%. I am currently on the waiting list for another kidney. While it's a humbling and uncertain time, I remain hopeful. My goal is to receive another precious gift, another chance, before my kidney function drops to 10%—the threshold where dialysis will become necessary. I know this journey is far from over, and the future holds challenges, but I’m ready to face them with strength, faith, and hope.
Yes, there are daily reminders of my journey—medications, infusions, and the routines that come with managing my health—but I don’t take a single moment for granted. Every day is a gift, and I’m reminded of just how precious life is. My transplant has given me a second chance, and it’s taught me to truly live in the present, appreciating the highs, learning from the lows, and treasuring every breath. Today, I celebrate not just the kidney I received but the life I’ve been able to live because of it—and I look forward with hope, trusting that another miracle is on the horizon.

Congratulations!! I've been blessed for 14 plus years. This miracle at a second chance could not happen without the work of scientific researchers, skilled professionals in the operating room, and the transplant teams that support us. We owe a great deal to these individuals who just don't seem to get enough credit.
