This donor day brings me some mixed emotions. It’s also my 30 month anniversary. That’s significant mostly because I now drop my Medicare coverage. I don’t want the significance of dropping Medicare to override my extreme gratitude of my donor and their sacrifice. I have a deceased donor for both of my organs. I frequently pause in my day to day activities and think of my donor, who I do not know. I try and enjoy the little things in their honor. Little things make the world seem to big and full of opportunities I want to make sure my donor has those “little things” through me.

I struggle with donor day and my complex feelings around it. I probably won't do much this year, other than maybe silently acknowledge my donor. Having both a living and deceased donor, there's so much emotion there. Of course I'm grateful, but it's also not something I want to talk about or routinely relive that experience. With it being the 14th, I'm more likely to spend the day celebrating my care partner, who is my amazing husband.

Donor Day, as @AliEm14 said, carries with it a lot of potentially heavy emotions. For me, because it falls around my transplant anniversary and my birthday, it's emotions from all over the spectrum.

For me, I've landed on service as the best way to honor my donor. Paying it forward has helped me heal, has helped my transplant community and I hope somehow makes my donor family feel the respect that we all have for those who chose to give life in their own dark moment.

Today, on the 14th and everyday, I will work for this transplant community by the work we are doing at Heartfelt Help Foundation. In the end, my prayer is that this work that has healed and is healing me, will serve the same purpose for others.

The official day of my transplant is the 25th. On the 24th of each month I light a candle in honor of my donor. This year I will be walking in a 5K race in his honor. I volunteer throughout the year and speak on the behalf of my OPO to promote organ and tissue donation.

I normally celebrate my donor on my transplant date which is in the end of December. How? I usually light a candle, think of him and his family, and talk about the gift of life he gave to me. since I was transplanted in Germany where the donor family has to stay anonymous, I unfortunately can't sent a letter to them which I would love to do the most.

But since it's Donor Day today, I will share my gratitude for his gift today as well. Because of my donor I'm alive today. I received double lungs and liver from him. But it wasn't only my life he saved. A man also received his heart and a one year old baby received part of my transplanted liver and is alive today as well. She just celebrated her 23rd birthday and will get married this year. All because of our donor. In addition to save all our lives, my donor also saved the next generation, my son. Without his lifesaving gift my son wouldn't be here today. He was born 10 years post my transplant.

Thank you so much!!! Because of you I lived 22 more years so far. Because of you I finished my degree, I met my husband, I moved to the USA, I became a mom, and collected countless happy memories from all over the world.
