Transplant Patient
I'm always the first person to recommend therapy. Anxiety, depression and mood issues are common side effects post transplant, both from the trauma and the medications we're on. Mental health post transplant needs to be more normalized than it is. If you don't already have a therapist, I'd suggest finding one with a background in trauma and/or chronic illness.
As far as practices go, I agree with meditation. I love somatic work, breath work and nervous system practices. One of my favourite "hacks" is take something in your hands and cross it from your left to right hand in front of your body (so like moving an object across my body from one hand to the other) which disrupts the anxiety signals in your brain.
Nothing I can do to make my life longer. Not a single thing. I will live the days that God has allowed me and that's it. So why be anxious? He feeds the birds of the air, and I am of much more value than they so I just rely on Him to take care of me. That's my mental and spiritual approach to post-transplant life.
That said, I do need to take care of myself. For me and my dependents. I am motivated to maximize what I have been given. Plus I enjoy being alive and FINALLY being retired! So I am motivated to care for me, exercise, eat right, take my meds, improve myself, etc.
Get into that Earth and garden! Feels so great, and you get rewarded with your homegrown spoils! It's so wonderful!
I agree with everything @AliEm14 because that is everything I do. Recently I have been crafting to reduce my anxiety, I try to fill my days with projects so I dont focus in things that cause me to worry. When I get overwhelmed I play feel good music and then talk things through with my therapist or a very close friend.
To me, walking with the musics at least 30-60 min, is the best mental therapy. Sometimes I walked 2-3 hours. After my kidney transplant, I went to school for my second career. And I got a good job at 47. Without walking exercises, I don’t think I could overcome the anxiety, bullying and stresses at school and at work.
i love to listen to music and i really enjoy watching comedy, something that will make me laugh.
