Kidneyversary
2026-07-09 One Year Later – A Year of Miracles, Challenges, Gratitude, and Life
July 9, 2025 will forever be one of the most important days of my life. It was the day I received the incredible gift of a kidney transplant—a second chance at life that I will never take for granted.
Looking back over this past year, it has truly been a journey filled with both incredible highs and difficult lows.
The road leading up to my transplant was not easy. My kidney function continued to decline until I reached Stage 5 kidney disease. I began dialysis on February 18, 2025, and for nearly five months, dialysis became part of my life while I waited and prayed for the phone call that could change everything.
Then, on July 9, that call finally came.
Words cannot fully express the gratitude I feel toward my donor and the donor's family. During one of the most difficult moments of their lives, they made a selfless decision that gave me the opportunity to continue mine. Their gift is something I carry with me every single day, and I pray that I honor it by living my life with purpose, gratitude, and kindness.
The transplant itself was only the beginning of a new chapter.
Recovery brought its own set of challenges. There were follow-up procedures, fluid buildup that had to be drained, a hematoma, the removal of the stent, and even a mild rejection episode that required three days of IV anti-rejection treatment. Later, I was hospitalized with pneumonia, which was another frightening experience. Thankfully, my transplanted kidney continued to do well, and with the outstanding care of my medical team, I was able to recover.
Life after transplant also meant learning a new normal—taking medications every day, monthly infusions, frequent blood work, regular appointments, drinking three liters of water daily, protecting myself from the sun because of immunosuppressant medications, and always remembering that this gift requires lifelong care and responsibility.
Through every challenge, I never lost sight of how blessed I truly am.
I want to thank every doctor, surgeon, nurse, transplant coordinator, technician, therapist, and every member of the medical staff who cared for me throughout this journey. Your knowledge, compassion, encouragement, and dedication gave me confidence during some of the most uncertain moments of my life. You don't just treat patients—you restore hope.
To my incredible wife, Alla, thank you for standing beside me every step of the way. Your love, strength, patience, and endless support carried me through the darkest days. I truly could not have done this without you.
To our son Tyler and our daughter Rochella, my family, and my friends—thank you for every prayer, every phone call, every text message, every visit, every encouraging word, and every act of kindness. Some of you may never realize how much your support meant to me, but I felt it every step of the way.
I am also grateful to everyone who supported me through social media. Many of you followed my journey, offered prayers, shared your own stories, and lifted my spirits when I needed it most. Your encouragement reminded me that I was never walking this path alone.
This past year has reminded me that life is precious. Every ordinary day is truly extraordinary. Every sunrise is a blessing. Every meal, every family gathering, every laugh, every photograph I take, every recipe I cook, every moment spent with the people I love has taken on a whole new meaning.
If there is one thing I have learned, it is never to take good health for granted. We often don't realize what a gift it is until it's challenged.
To everyone who is currently on dialysis, waiting for a transplant, recovering from surgery, or facing their own health battle: don't lose hope. There will be difficult days, but miracles do happen. Keep believing, keep fighting, and lean on those who love you.
As I celebrate this first transplant anniversary, my heart is overflowing with gratitude.
Thank you to God for watching over me throughout this journey.
Thank you to my donor for the greatest gift imaginable.
Thank you to my family.
Thank you to my friends.
Thank you to my medical team.
Thank you to everyone who prayed for me, encouraged me, and walked beside me over this past year.
Today, I celebrate not just one year with a new kidney—but one year of renewed hope, renewed purpose, and a deeper appreciation for every single day.
Here's to many more healthy years ahead.
With a grateful heart,
Chaim Yaakov (Jake) Danishevsky
