I like that this video still highlights the importance of verifying everything with your team/doctor but it is a great topic. It is difficult to understand a difference between proteins and amino acids if you are newly diagnosed and never really had in depth education into the sciences.

In CKD we are told to have just enough protein but not too much to put stain on the kidneys. Then during dialysis, we lose protein, albumin goes down, and we are asked to increase protein intake but at that point we face loss of appetite, food tasting bad, and having such a restriction on salt, potassium and phosphorus. All of that made it so difficult for me to consistently eat enough protein. For me personally, I got tired of the shakes and bars every single day because I was just barley reaching my goal. Much later in my life when I worked in hemodialysis, I saw patients getting supplemental nutrition through dialysis (IDPN for hemo and IPN for PD) and I wondered why I did not have that option. I learned that you have to meet a certain criteria for low albumin, BMI and weightless. So even though I was dancing on the line, I still did not qualify while I was a PD patient. It would make way more sense to me to have the option before albumin gets too low and too much weight is lost especially because albumin is such an important marker for us.

How has everyone here dealt with managing albumin and protein intake?
