Live Vaccine
Well, I just wanted to update you all. My little transplant recipient recieved his first dose of the Varicella (chicken poxs) vaccine that is live this week. We are hoping for good results and so far haven't seen anything negative for him.
Some things I learned at the appointment with infectious disease are:
1. Chicken Poxs is a air borne illness that is breathed in. So while it is highly contagious I learned that it's not through touch. Did you know that? It was news to me.
2. Chicken pox germinated from the liver! And have an incubation time of 5-10 days before you even get those little itchy pussy bumps all over your skin.
The infectious disease team called after day 1 and will call again on day 7 and we will check labs at the end of the month before the next dose of the vaccine.
Wish us luck!!

Transplant Patient
I had no idea! I do know I had chicken pox as a child and was told post transplant I could get it again.
i think I heard it had an incubation period but I didn’t know it was airborne. Another reason to wear those masks!
