Heat Tolerance Help for the Summer

ShelbycreatesTransplant Patient
April 3, 2023 in General

Hi friends. We went down to Orlando and the theme parks for my kids’ spring break last week. I noticed that I’m quite a bit more sensitive to the heat post transplant.

Has anyone else noticed this?

And what tips do you have for keeping cool when you’re out in the sun?

I've always been really heat intolerant - probably less so since transplant actually. I also live really far north (where I live is considered subarctic) and even in the summer our temperatures don't usually get above 35 celcius (like 95 Fahrenheit)

I definitely wouldn't move anywhere hotter.

During the summer months when we do get hot here and I am outside, I'm always seeking out shade and drinking lots of fluids. I try to plan things so I'm outside early in the morning and later at night, avoiding the hottest part of the day. As soon as I notice I start to feel overheated, I'm taking breaks.

I also do ice baths year round, which I think has helped my body adapt better long term to temperature changes, including heat.

I really love cooling towels. I used them even before transplant. I am a huge baseball fan, and spend many hours outside in the hot summer temps. Cooling towels are light to pack and dry quickly. running one under cool tap water and placing around my neck will help cool me off. We have historically gotten Six Flags seasons passes and its always hot. I can put a towel in my fanny pack, and run it under the water from the drinking fountain and stay cool while standing in line for a ride, or sitting at an afternoon baseball game. Then, I just put the towel back in my fanny pack before boarding the ride, or when I am done with it.

I always wear hats when I am outside. I used to work for a skincare specialist and I am super protective of being exposed to the sun, especially my face, so I embrace and love a good floppy hat. Having long hair, that is always in a pony tail/mess bun, I like ones that have a spot for a low pony or bun.

This will be my first summer after transplant where I have the whole summer to be outside. Last summer my transplant was August 14, and between a few back and forth hospital stays I didn't spend much time outside unless it was in my backyard in the shade. So... Everything I said above could be totally wrong for me moving forward.

I have always felt so irritable in HUMIDITY. I can handle heat but its the humidity that drives me crazy. Drinking cold drinks techncially isnt the best when looking at it in an ayurvedic lense. I try to eat a lot of lighter foods so I dont feel more bogged down. Also, cooling towels with essential oils. Peppermint essential oil helps me with my breath and internally cools me. I dont ingest it but just breathing with it and doing "peppermint breath bombs". Cold water immersion such as cold showers, bodies of water, or ice baths.

Yes, humidity and cold both really bother me. The dry heat not so much. But could be because I live in San Diego. I try not to go anywhere that I know will be hot. When I went to Disney World, I went in January and found that was pleasant. Fewer people too.

If I am stuck somewhere that is too hot I try to wear breathable clothing. Usually linen and something flowy. I will also use those little travel fans. And sip ice water. I am always worried I will get too dehydrated if I am outside in the heat for too long.

I definitely am more sensitive to heat and humidity. Our house is divided, my husband freezes and I’m on fire. Haha. It’s been worse with my added Prednisone and Celcept!! I’m so ready for fall!!!!

I'm lucky my husband also runs hot, so we keep our house pretty chilly! Also living in a sub arctic area where we have winter 9 months out of the year means we're really accustomed to the cold. Anyone that comes over to our house, though, is always freezing!

I’m in mountains of Virginia so it gets hot but usually not too bad. We’ve been blessed with lots of rain this year so it keeps things nice. We’ve hit the upper 90s a few weeks in July and this week is heading that way. I keep telling myself fall is near!! Stay cool friends!!

I am hitting the menopause age so heat flashes are a common occurrence for me. My transplant kids are always complaining about the AC being on in the car, but when we go outside I make them cover up to prevent issues with the sun and then they welcome that AC on full blast.
