Dr Calne - a true hero - passed away this weekend
Updated January 9, 2024
in General
Dr Calne conducted many firsts / including the first European liver transplant, as well as the use of modern immune suppression (rapamycin).
Without his contributions we would not be where we are now.
Together with Dr Starzl on the U.S. side of the Atlantic (Dr Calne was British), he is considered a true pioneer in our industry.
Let us take a moment and honor his legacy and thank him for his work and sacrifices that have enabled us to live life after end stage disease…

Thank you so much for the info Karin. I get so wrapped up in the day-to-day of focusing on transplant today that I forget to look back to acknowledge the heroes, in medicine, who have made it possible for us to have transplants today.
I read a few articles on him today. What a determined doctor. A real hero!!
Saluting Dr Calne - EXTRA kudos to him for taking the time and having the talent to actually PAINT his patients. (I heard about this on a podcast!!)
What a way to truly connect with your patients!
